The world of...
what was it about?
This unit was a majority of student based learning. Each student chose a field of study that they were interested in, from there, if anyone in the class had chosen that same career, you were grouped together. Each group was responsible for researching, and bringing in a speaker (in the field they were studying) to talk to the class, and educate us in their career, and what it would be like to be them for a day!
Why did you like it?
We had a good (for the most part) amount of variety as far as the careers that were chosen. We had a OBGYN, a cosmetic dentist, a general practitioner, and everything in between. It was fascinating, and caused me to really think about the career path I'm actively pursuing, and whether or not I want to continue, or switch directions. Honestly, I only liked this unit at first because in Apps and Pracs, we were doing lots of hard class work, and it was nice to be able to come in and listen to speakers without being assigned homework.
how did it change me?
Honestly, this unit didn't change me personally. I have been actively pursuing one career path since Freshman year, and none of our speakers persuaded me to change my mind. Two other people in the dental class with me, both changed their minds about dentistry completely, one girl decided she wanted to be and OBGYN, and the other decided she wanted to drop out of CAL all together.
what would you have done differently?
Students have a habit of making decisions based on who they're going to be in a group with. In this case, I'm no exception. I chose to research Orthodontics because that's what my best friend was doing. I wish I would have chose Cosmetic Dentistry. If I could do this project over, I would have done what I was actually interested in, because how often do you get the chance to actually talk to someone in the career field that interests you?
